Tails 6.4

The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The distribution's latest version, Tails 6.4, introduces a random seed to help strength cryptographic functions: "Tails now stores a random seed on the USB stick to strengthen all cryptography. Having a secure random number generator is critical to some of the cryptography used in Tails, for example, in the Persistent Storage, Tor, or HTTPS. This random seed is stored outside of the Persistent Storage so that all users can benefit from stronger cryptography. Changes and updates: switch to using HTTPS addresses instead of an onion addresses for the Debian and Tails APT repositories, this makes the Additional Software feature more reliable; update Tor Browser to 13.0.16; update the Tor client to 0.4.8.12; update Thunderbird to 115.12.0. Fixed problems: fix more issues when unlocking the persistent storage; fix connecting to a mobile broadband network on some hardware; enable again the PDF reader of Thunderbird that we disabled in Tails 6.3 for security reasons; improve the error message of Tails Cloner when the target USB stick cannot be unmounted because it is being used...."

SparkyLinux is a lightweight, Debian-based distribution. The project has published an update to its semi-rolling branch. This update includes new versions of Firefox, LibreOffice, Thunderbird, and the kernel. It also rolls back a recent change, swapping out the newer Nala package manager in favour of APT. "The latest version of Sparky CLI Installer provides a few changes, such as autopartitioning option and so, autosetting the target system a little faster. The Nala [package manager] doesn't upgrade packages properly as APT, so I recommend to uninstall Nala on Sparky Testing. There is also issue of libgnutls-dane0 package (massive package update in testing) which has to be uninstalled before upgrading other packages. There are three new package repo and ISO mirror servers available for downloading ISO images and installing packages, located: US2 in NY, USA, SI1 and SI2 in Singapore, Asia. All three servers are provided thanks to Astian, Inc."

The project's latest release, version 6.0, places a focus on accessing storage and protecting the user from malicious storage devices. "Tails 6.0 warns you about errors when reading or writing from your Tails USB stick. These alerts can help you diagnose hardware failures on your USB stick and backup your Persistent Storage before it's too late. Mount external devices automatically - When you plug in an external storage device, a USB stick or an external hard disk, Tails 6.0 mounts it automatically. If the storage device contains an encrypted partition, Tails 6.0 offers you to unlock the encryption automatically. This feature also simplifies how to unlock VeraCrypt encrypted volumes. Protection against malicious USB devices - If an attacker manages to plug a malicious USB device in your computer, they could run software that breaks the security built in Tails without your knowledge. To protect from such attacks while you are away from your computer, Tails 6.0 ignores any USB device that is plugged in while your screen is locked."
