Linux Mint 21.3 Xfce Edition

The Linux Mint team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution: Linux Mint 21.3. The new point release includes several new features, including a new type of Cinnamon add-on (or "spice") which adds actions to the file manager. This release also includes support for Secure Boot and introduces experimental support for Wayland sessions in Cinnamon. "Cinnamon add-ons are called 'spices'. Until now Cinnamon supported 4 types of spices: Applets: Little programs which can be placed in your panel(s); Desklets: Same thing, but on your desktop; Extensions: Scripts which can alter the way Cinnamon works; Themes: Look and feel for your Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon 6.0 features a new type of spices: Actions. Actions, formerly known as 'Nemo actions', are add-ons for your file manager's context menu. Right-click an .iso file and look at the context menu. The 'Make bootable USB stick' and 'Verify' menu items are Nemo actions, provided by the mintstick package. In Cinnamon 6.0, actions are now a type of spice. You can download, enable and rate them like any other spices: applets, desklets, extensions and Cinnamon themes."

Tiny Core Linux 15.0

Version 15.0 of Tiny Core Linux, an independently-developed, minimalist and modular distribution with community-built extensions, has been released. The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release, version 6.0, places a focus on accessing storage and protecting the user from malicious storage devices. "Tails 6.0 warns you about errors when reading or writing from your Tails USB stick. These alerts can help you diagnose hardware failures on your USB stick and backup your Persistent Storage before it's too late. Mount external devices automatically - When you plug in an external storage device, a USB stick or an external hard disk, Tails 6.0 mounts it automatically. If the storage device contains an encrypted partition, Tails 6.0 offers you to unlock the encryption automatically. This feature also simplifies how to unlock VeraCrypt encrypted volumes. Protection against malicious USB devices - If an attacker manages to plug a malicious USB device in your computer, they could run software that breaks the security built in Tails without your knowledge. To protect from such attacks while you are away from your computer, Tails 6.0 ignores any USB device that is plugged in while your screen is locked."

Lubuntu 22.04.4

The Ubuntu team has announced an update to the distribution's 22.04 LTS release. The new update, 22.04.4, mostly fixes security bugs and includes a new install image for ARM servers: "As usual, this point release includes many updates and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-severity bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. 22.04.4 also includes a new arm64+largemem ISO for ARM servers which provides a 64k page size kernel. This can increase throughput at the cost of higher memory usage."
